Summer has a way of inviting us outward—longer days, warmer air, and calendars that suddenly feel a bit fuller. For older adults, this seasonal shift can be both energizing and, at times, quietly depleting. The body may welcome the sunshine, but it doesn’t always appreciate prolonged heat or disrupted routines. This is where a thoughtful yoga practice becomes less about doing more—and more about restoring balance.

As temperatures rise, the body works harder to regulate internal heat. Research shows that aging can reduce the efficiency of thermoregulation, making older adults more susceptible to heat stress and dehydration (Kenney & Munce, 2003). Translation? That midday walk or vigorous practice that felt fine in spring may now feel like a bit too much.

Yoga offers a gentle and effective way to recalibrate.

Cooling the System from Within

Rather than matching summer’s intensity, yoga invites you to soften into it. Slower-paced practices, restorative poses, and mindful breathing help shift the nervous system toward a parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) state. This shift supports relaxation, digestion, and recovery—especially important during warmer months (Streeter et al., 2012).

A simple place to begin is with the breath. Extending the exhale—even by a few seconds—can signal the body to downshift. Think of it as quietly telling your system, “We’re safe. We can slow down now.”

And no, it doesn’t require sitting cross-legged for an hour. Even a few minutes of intentional breathing while seated comfortably can be surprisingly effective.

Hydration: Your Summer Companion

Let’s talk about water—because your body certainly is. Proper hydration plays a critical role in maintaining temperature balance, circulation, and overall energy levels. Even mild dehydration can impact how the body responds to heat (Popkin et al., 2010).

Pairing your yoga practice with mindful hydration—before and after—can make a noticeable difference. A gentle reminder: if you’re feeling sluggish, it may not be your motivation that’s missing… it might just be a glass of water.

Rethinking Effort in the Heat

Summer is not the season to push harder—it’s the season to practice smarter.

Overexertion in high temperatures can increase fatigue, dizziness, and risk of heat-related illness, particularly for older adults (Kenney & Munce, 2003). This is where yoga’s adaptability shines. Choosing a shaded space, practicing earlier in the morning, or opting for slower sequences can help you stay consistent without overtaxing the body.

And if a pose feels like too much? That’s not a failure—it’s feedback. Your body is remarkably communicative when we’re willing to listen.

Finding Balance in a Bright Season

There’s something beautiful about allowing your yoga practice to evolve with the seasons. In summer, that may mean less intensity and more intention. Less striving, more sensing.

Because while your body may love sunshine… it doesn’t always love 105 degrees.
